Field Marshal – 4 Simple Responsibilities (Volunteer Role)
Role:
Field Marshals are visible volunteers who help keep games safe, respectful, and calm—especially around the bleachers.
1. Be Visible & Present
- Wear the yellow “FIELD MARSHAL” jacket provided by referees at all times.
- Stay by your assigned half of the bleachers for your game (that is across of your team’s bench, which is in the opposite side of the bleachers/parents)
- Your presence alone helps prevent problems.
2. Remind, Don’t Argue
- If spectators become loud, aggressive, or disrespectful:
- If you feel confortable, politely remind them of the Spectator Code of Conduct.
- Otherwise, please call the attention of the referee with a timeout signal so he or she can stop the game and ask the pertinent coach to address the situation. (see section 3 below)
- Field Marshals do not argue or engage—just observe and remind spectators and/or bring problems to the referee.
3. Get Help Early
- If behavior continues or escalates, immediately notify:
- the referee.
- If the referee has left, notify:
- a coach,
- or Idaho Futsal staff.
- If safety feels at risk, call 911. Safety always comes first.
4. Stay Through the End
- Remain in position until teams and spectators have exited the court area after the game.
- The post-game period is when emotions are highest.
Important Notes for Field Marshals
- ❌ You are not security
- ❌ You should never physically intervene
- ✅ Your job is visibility, calm reminders (optional), and alerting referees of unacceptable spectator behavior when needed
